“Meu Amor”! *I call over to John* look! “Alex you’re such a clever boy, walk to Daddy” * Squealing with delight Alex grasps my fingers in his tiny hands, he wobbles at first as he takes his first tentative steps. * Oh John! our son is walking! *Alexander continues to toddle, still showing his delight as with each tiny step unsteadily over to his father’s waiting arms. Amongst the excited gurgling, John scoops Alex up into his arms. *  “John, he is growing up so quickly every day I see changes.”
*My heart sinks, Catina enters the nursery, only my commitment to duty could allow the wrench I feel by lost precious time with Alex, more time lost than I am happy with. *
 
Catina my dear, reluctantly I must leave him in your care. Perhaps a story before his nap.
 
*I lift my face and smile at Alexander who in his father’s arms, happily twists John’s hair around his little fingers. Gently pressing a kiss on the Alex’s flushed cheek, John passes him over to Catina. *
 
I suppose we need to go! Oh, Meu Amor, one day we will have time to spend together.

*I smile broadly as Alexander tries to grasp my hair with his little fingers before I manage to hand him over to Catina and wave to him. He definitely has Aurore’s nose and her stubborn determination, even if he does have my hair and eyes. And I really do mean stubborn. About the only thing that can move him when he really decides to throw a little tantrum is ‘Uncle’ Miguel, who has a knack of being able to distract him with silly faces. *
 
We will, my rose.
 
*I kiss her cheek gently and lead the way to the Swan Room and the throng of Ambassadors and other so-called dignitaries, or freeloaders as Miguel prefers to refer to them, gathered to try and attract my attention. My spirits soar as I notice Porthos chatting with Don Pau. Who would have thought Porthos would make such a good ambassador? Granted, the fancy title helps, but I think most people underestimate him … or at least, they underestimate how much alcohol and food he can consume without showing any ill effect. And I sense that Don Pau has been helping Porthos with his diplomacy. That, or Porthos is trying to drink Don Pau’s wine cellar dry, a feat even Bart has failed to accomplish. *
Please excuse me, my dear. I must go talk to Porthos and see if he has any news from France. If he has word from your Uncle, I’ll be sure to send him over.

*My words evaporating into the din of chattering people, John disappears through the ante-room door, and I sigh with relief to see an old friend tottering towards me. Charles always the perfect gentleman, proffers his arm, with such aplomb that I cannot help but smile! Placing my hand over his and inkling my head courtesy*

How do you endure the many insufferable courtiers, I have spent hours smiling courteously to ladies and gentlemen of high status, through gritted teeth, that my face hurts! and my poor hand has been drooled over by vacuous ambassador’s who would use my favour to gain an audience with the King.

*Pulling in closer towards his side and whispering as the walls have ears, which strain to catch a snippet of gossip. *

Indeed, Charles as you say. Your wit is Sharp, but your rapier would slice an opponent open, revealing their insincerity!  and we must practice caution and will meet privately at the first opportunity. Charles, there is A, Adriana tries and get her attention! Abilio and Adriana have just returned to court, as newlyweds.

Happy,  we are both exquisitely happy. Abilio is very attentive and provides for my every need. I do have news, however, Abilio has requested some time with John!

Every day we would ride out and explore the land belonging to the castle. It’s is a truly beautiful area, on one of these occasions the ride took us very near to the border. As Abilio unpacked a picnic, carried in a saddle bag, we could hear voices, men talking in Spanish!

*Cloistered within the alcove, Adriana had revealed some troubling news, but Adriana reassured me that Abilio has requested some time with John. *
 
When John and I find time to be alone, I will ask John what his thoughts are!*

*Abilio strolls in our direction, realizing more than anybody how difficult it is to find precious time alone together, I squeeze Andriana’s hand with an understanding smile. *

Adriana go to him and my dear enjoy a little more time together alone before Abilio meets with John.

Honestly, John, all is well. However, there are some Spanish troops billeted on the border, not far from my castle, and there have been rumours of some minor troubles. Nothing serious, as yet, and no direct confrontations. It’s more minor things, like horses going missing, and crops being raided. Nothing major enough to warrant a full army investigating, and I think, perhaps, that is what they are wanting anyway. I just don’t want things to get out of hand.

*Nonchalantly I begin to stroll amongst dignitaries, who mill around with a vague hope of procuring an audience with John. Graciously as I mingle I courteously join in conversation politely enquiring of dignitary’s health, easily overhearing the topics of gossip from groups nearby. One conversation, in particular, draws my attention, swivelling daintily in beautifully embroidered silk slippers, with a swish volume of silk skirt whisper of intrigue, as I sweep over to where Amaliur is hiding, concealed behind a large potted plant! coughing discreetly! *

Smile Amalur, nicely not through gritted teeth. The German ambassador’s wife is waving frantically, in an attempt to get my attention.
 
*I raise a hand and wave smiling graciously, holding my breath, relieved the ambassador curtails his wife’s enthusiasm for directing her attention towards a delegation from, Brazil, the ambassador a cousin of Johns. Sliding my hand over Amalure’s leather-clad forearm, I begin to tug slightly at the leather sleeve. *
 
Amalure, I’m afraid I need to sit down and I am gasping for a glass of wine, would you be so kind?
 
*Settling comfortably into an overstuffed leather chair, near the edge of the great swan hall, I find it easy enough to turn my head slightly to the side, enough to overhear Amante’s conversation. He entertains the wife of the Italian ambassador, while Felipe is deep in discussion with the Italian and German ambassadors. It seems Amante’s mission would be to spread falsehoods regarding a Spanish galleon laden with gold. *

*I explode through the opened door into the antechamber Amalure behind me, we interrupt john discussions with Miguel, he looks up somewhat surprised. The tempestuous side of my nature tempts me to stamp my foot, but I refrain with decorum. *
 
John, I have never been so insulted, that awful little man, Amante, really! If I had been carrying my dagger …. Well you know what I’m capable of doing! He really is the most odious little man! While sitting and enjoying a glass of wine, escaping the maddening throng of diplomats.
 
It was sickening. He confided in the Italian ambassador’s wife, that I believed that I was French, and not of noble birth, that he would have never have taken me for royalty…..

Amante’s “pièce de résistance”

and I quote! “ I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the King was forced to marry her because of that rather plain child of theirs, always supposing he is indeed the father.”

If it had not been for Amalure and the importance of Amante’s conversation, I would have demanded his expulsion from court!
 
*Taking a deep breath, I continue*
 
Now to his gossip, and the Galleon sailing under the Dutch flag which had recently sailed from the Spanish Neverland’s heading for the Spanish port of Málaga.The galleon is laden with enough gold and precious artefacts to fund Olivares, and the Spanish King’s campaigns in the aggression in Europe he must need to boost the coffers without the contributions of taxes from Portugal. Apparently, and according to Amante the “Portuguese will never suspect!” Rest assured Felipe will be party to this.
 
This ruse is to prevent any pirates who would relieve them of their, gold! Why else would Amante speak so publicly? However, there must be some truth in the rumour that a Spanish galleon is at sea, under a foreign flag.

 {Confound these dusty roads, I find myself longing for the green pasture of England, Lord may we return safely and may our home still be standing. Marguerite and I were brought up in privilege, which extended to royal favour, because of our father’s position at court and my friendship with the king. Margarite, no longer the child, rest her head on her cloak which she has rolled up to use as a pillow.

Memories flood back from a time when life was tranquil and Margarite much younger, my sister, would lay her head on my lap and fall asleep at the end of the day, now I wonder if those days have disappeared into a vicious civil war.

Leaning forward I strike the roof just under the coachman’s seat with a series of rapid audible blows, with the end of my sword stick, enquiring how much further until we arrive in Obidos.}

“My good Sir, monstrous uncomfortable! Sink me! how much further to Obidos, am I expected to endure my bone are shaken Sir, shaken!”

{He grunts his answer the inaudible swine! Margarite stirs and straightens up to sit next to me, smiling affectionately, reaching over to tuck a strand of hair under her cap, which had worked it’s way free. Laying a finger to my lips and pointed up to where the driver sits, worrying, I fall easily into character.}

Bored, bored! Bored! // Jubblies raise slowly expanding ripe melons, despondently deflating with a sigh! What’s a girl to do? The establishment overrun with old codgers propping up the bar like Albain, they leave the ladies to languish for lack of clientele.
 
 

Do my eyes deceive me, perks up shimmy’s assist bulging with delights …..soldiers with full purses!

// Look lively Betty, patrons! Lucia flounce up your skirt, and for the lords, sake put the dagger away!

//Sashaying towards the door. Joao grins, his men salivate at the thought of a jug or two, hands meandering freely over all Betty has to offer……and true to her name she offers all. // Now here’s a patron who appreciates the arts.

 
// Sideling up closer to Joao, pert cherrilets brushing against his manly chest, he opens his hand flat, throws back his head laughing and slaps my derrière! Joao turns to his men, “don’t be shy gents there’s plenty to go around!” Hot on their heels father Ryan followed by the odd couple a foppish fella accompanied by a young man. //

// and that’s not the only thing that will be popping! Raising a brow with a coquettish wink, I call over to the bartender for the bottle to be placed on the bar, for the thirsty father.  Charles, I’m leaving now, there is a wagon I can use and I’m told the docks are not too far! When I will return I hope it will not be alone. [Pulling the woollen cap further down over my forehead, ensuring every strand of hair is tucked under the prickly material, with little more than a glance sideways I slip away quietly from the tavern as Charles enters and causes a diversion.]

*Watches the tavern half-heartedly, while reading the communication just received from John via Tiago. Spanish troops are mustering near Abilio’s base … I’d best send some of my most competent men to take a quiet look. Nothing confrontational, but just enough to let them know we know they’re there. Of course, to do that, I’ll have to tear them away from their current preoccupation of trying to make the bawdiest remarks to the staff in here. Not that their attempts are bringing as much as a blush to the ‘ladies’ cheeks. I mean, for Christ’s sake, Betty is trying to convince the good father to relinquish his vows … fat chance of that … in fact, as much a chance of that as Albain convincing Mano that he should get drinks on the house. It’s a good job Tiago headed for home when he did. Lord only knows where Mano got these barmaids from but they were set to eat the poor lad alive. Glances towards the door as fresh blood, I mean fresh customers, tumble through. The young lad in the shadows beyond the door seems vaguely familiar, in a rather disturbing way. The man that actually steps through the door … oh good grief, Miguel was not exaggerating. Grabs my ale. This could be entertaining … if I’m lucky anyway.*

[Obsidian shadows engulf the edges of the docks, tiny nails scratch at the cobbles scurrying rats escape from putrid bilge water, eager for fresh food after weeks at sea. Hanging over the ship, which flies the Portuguese flag, an unpleasant miasma released when the hatches were raised, the noxious fumes forcing the crew on deck. Reins pulled back by the driver and the hoses respond trotting on the spot to a halt and grinding wagon wheels stop near the gangplank!

Freed from the confines of skirts it is easy enough to jump down from the wagon tray. With some gratification that Jane waits near the gangplank, her dress that of an English gentleman, I smile as her manner matches Charles in every way. I nod and bid “him” welcome puzzled by the lack of luggage. Turning away from the ship, for some reason unknown to me I glance back over my shoulder, and I can’t believe my eyes.

Up in the rigging, a monkey dressed as a pirate scampers up the mast after a parrot who flaps his wing furiously squawking! Watched by the Captain of the vessel who speaks to a seagull!!] Sir, I think we need to leave Now! the miasma fumes are having an adverse effect on me!

Charles this is indeed good news. // Picking up the letter which Charles has slid across the table conscious that out covert operations against our enemies should not be discovered the letter is slipped into an inside pocket of the dress coat. // Charles, I believe I am to sail back to England on the morrow tide, slipping anchor at dawn. The Captain goes by the name of Jacob the cousin of Captain Bart, he has a cargo of wine and spirits to collect for the proprietors of this tavern on the return journey.  I am led to understand the ship will set sail with a cargo of “Bilbao swords”  made from the finest tempered iron specially crafted for the king’s infantry. The swords were commissioned from the town of Bilbao, they are simpler than military version of the cup hilt rapier but with a shorter, broader blade sharpened on both sides making it much more suitable for cuts and thrusts. I will use my usual agents and methods for their transport to Oxford and the Kings infantry, along with the bolts of woollen cloth for uniforms. Albain is … ah … unconscious. So, everything is pretty much normal, or as normal as we ever get.}
Lucia, take the helm. The wind is right, we can moor right on the dock. Steady as we go. Remember, a quiet entrance. We’re trying to avoid any unwanted attention. Once we land, you all know your jobs. Jacob, go and check with the Dutch, Murat, check with the Turks, Albain, check the tavern and try not to drink all the rum. We want any word of either a Spanish or English ship. El Dorodo, Golden, gouden, Altın, d’or, Dourado … anything
on those lines. Any sightings in recent weeks, or any English or Spanish ships acting strangely or secretively. Billy, stay here and keep that damn parrot under control. Mooring ropes ready. Easy now, easy. {I watch as Jacob suddenly decides to be the first ashore and swings himself onto the dock. I close my eyes and shake my head. {I chuckle to myself. Well done Billy.} Ah, Genevieve, my dear. No really, I am perfectly fine. I’ve been treated with all the common courtesy you’d expect them to show a common thief. No, of course, I am not a common thief. I was merely reappropriating your property.

Oh yes, she was a truly dreadful creature. ‘m sure she purloined far more than your comb. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear other items were missing. Really? The Governor told you that other items were also missing? Ruby necklace, pearl earrings … dreadful, simply dreadful. Of course, it must have been her. After all, they searched me, and they know I didn’t have the items. {I smile as the guard blushes and shuffles his feet.} And the Governor himself signed my release papers? Well, that’s excellent news.

You really didn’t have to put yourself to so much trouble. I’m sure they would have realized their mistake … eventually. {I glance pointedly at Jacob and Salty.} I must admit, it will be good to get out of here, into some fresh air. The personal hygiene of some of their residents is somewhat lacking. {I stand back as the guard unfastens the keys from his belt and opens the door … and smile as he slumps to the floor. I nod at Amos, who grins a rather toothy golden grin back at me. I must ask him about that one day. One day when we’re well clear. I step forward, grab the keys, and unlock the cell door to Jacob and Salty.} This way, gentlemen, and I use that term quite wrongly. {I allow Genevieve to lead the way, with Amos and Billy at the rear.

The guard on the gate gives us a cursory glance and a nod, and that’s it. we’re out. Sometimes the simplest plans are the best. No time to hang around though. That guard will soon wake up, and then all hell will break loose. Genevieve halts well clear of the jail.I smile and kiss her hand … and she slaps me across the face. I grin at Billy.} I think I earned that one. Are you going to be alright here, Gen? The guard won’t be happy when he wakes up and finds he’s short three prisoners instead of one.

Well, yes I should imagine you do have Governor wrapped around your finger. He’s male and he’s not dead … I grin at Amos, who roars with laughter. Until next time, Gen. {I risk another kiss, this time to her cheek, take the ruby necklace she offers me, as my part of the takings, and then we’re off, with Billy leading the way, down to the dock and the ship … er …. } Billy … where the hell is my ship? {I look around and groan as I spot Albain, fast asleep in a rowboat by the dock. Secreting myself behind a curtain in an alcove, closeted in the shadows watching and waiting the curtain held slightly to the side by my hand.  John naturally knows of my purpose suggesting the subterfuge, no one can be trusted even the walls have eyes and ears and time is of the essence.
John, the first to arrive with Miguel at his side, John casts a glance surreptitiously towards where my concealment is known only to him. Joao and Bart arrive Babette’s” ladies” drape their partially clothed forms over the pair with a flurry of skirts, anticipating a lavish reward for wares so obviously displayed.
The gentlemen have business to discuss and buxom wenches can ply their trade on the crew of the Golden Oracle. There is nothing like gold to focus a man’s mind, business before wine and women. Dissolving into the shadows I watch and wait for a signal.}

After all, the last thing they want to do is annoy the owner of the tavern. Or rather, the co-owner. How Mano and Don Pau ever came up with this hare-brained scheme … I shake my head with a grin. {I scratch my chin, thoughtfully. Probably best to stick to the short version.} Well, we found it. Not quite as laden with gold as we’d hoped, but enough to make the trip worthwhile. I think there’s more hidden. At least now I have a new source of information, and my cousin has a new first mate. {I shrug my shoulders slightly.} An old acquaintance, best not to ask, but at least it should please Betty since she seems to prefer dry land and warm laps. The next part of the search should be easier. {Famous last words.} In the meantime, your battle coffers have swelled somewhat, my expenses have been covered, and there’s enough left over to keep our friend in the shadows happy.

Excellent news. We need to make a move to the border before they make other plans for payment. The Spanish army has been pushing their luck of late, and we need to remind them who won the last war.

I think it’s time we put their resolve to the test as well, and if we could be back in the warmth of the castle before winter truly hits, all the better. {We get underway with much grumbling from the brute driving the carriage, it will be to my liking when we arrive in Obidos, where Margarite waits for me at the tavern.

It is with some apprehension that we commend our persons into the hands of pirates who roam the high seas, even if John commends them highly.  Although they have their uses I myself have relied on corsair’s who sail out of Bilbao on many occasions good Basque fishermen whose livelihood depended on the sea until Spanish taxes made it unprofitable.

I digress from my thoughts my mind meandering jostled by every bump in the road the barbarian driver selects to steer over! Margarite received coded correspondence from my dearest Lady Jane, and from the little information contained within it would appear the arrangements are in place, “Mater is confined to Oxford, the wine and candles ordered.”  These are dangerous times in which we live and for all our sakes our plans must never be discovered, the roundheads would seize the opportunity to capture the King. I bang once more on the roof of the carriage}

“You sir! How much longer must I endure your erratic driving?  I’m shaken sir, shaken!

{Hardly audible grunts are carried through the open window, the driver expressing his displeasure at a simple request. To my annoyance the confounded brute takes delight in grounding the wheels of the carriage in every pot hole to either side of the road, ultimately grinding it to a tumultuous halt, the driver is catapulted from his seat through the air headfirst into the bushes on the side of the road, just end I say. Leaving the carriage at a precarious angle with a broken axle in the ditch, excreting myself from the jangled wreckage I demand attention from the befuddle guard.}  I say sir! A horse A horse sir! {I grimace and scratch my head.} God but these wigs make the head itch, don’t you know. {I shake my head as my “coach driver” also known as Billy , sniggers, though I’m not sure if he finds my accent or my costume the most amusing.

I take a deep breath as we draw up to the side of the ship. I dismount slowly, making a great show of placing my delicately booted foot in just the right place. How do these people manage to get from A to B in less than a week without the help of at least 4 servants?! I swear, if I had to travel like this every day …. I tip my hat slightly to my coach driver, making sure not to dislodge this ridiculous wig.} Sink me, but that ride could have been a little more comfortable, don’t you know. See to my luggage, there’s a good chap.

{I strut down the pier to the gangplank of my ship, the Golden Oracle, and Murat, who is somehow managing not to laugh, though for the love of god I don’t know how, with my left hand tilted at a weird angle, dangling the lace handkerchief from it in what I hope is an affected manner. I’m beginning to have a whole new appreciation for that English spy.} Hogs blood, man, get my luggage aboard, this instant. {Teeters across the gang plank carefully. I swear, as soon as these so called boots are off my feet, I will never be wearing them again. I glance around … ah yes, so the Spanish have spotted me, and they seem interested. Let’s hope this whole act was enough to convince them. I’d hate to think I went through all this for nothing.}

I place the blame firmly on the braggart who drove so recklessly on the road from Pena, and now the carriage is rutted in a ditch with a broken axle no less, slap me, I’m lucky to be alive, dear heart! {Exercising an exquisite “plie” discreetly adjusting the confinement of the family jewels. Lowering my head with a amuse smile knowingly irritating my beloved sister, adding further to her ill humour when flourishing a low flamboyant bow!}

{I lean towards Margarite as we follow the begotten creature.} I observed that the voyage will lack the pleasantries of life! And you, my dear sister, have little regard for my injuries, my anatomy has been crushed like walnuts in the festive season!

Margarite sets about stowing our bags unbeknown to the motley crew we are accustomed to such quarters and I am pleased we have at least a rag curtain which separates the bunk beds, slight relief from her condescending glares. My sister and I have endured far worse since the beginning of this confounded war.}

I’m still amused by the look on the captain of the Spanish ship when Billy waved to him … I’m sure he’s still wondering how Billy could possibly see him at that distance of course, he couldn’t. I saw him, through a telescope, although I wasn’t in an obvious position, so he never saw me. Hopefully, news will now spread through the Spanish navy that my crew have the eyesight of hawks. {The ship rocks with the flow of water which gently laps against the wooden sides, flaring my nostrils I detect the smell of brine which clung in the air at sea has all but disappeared. Instead the musky smell of the river bank, the familiar odour of rotting leaves fallen trees covered in moss and the odd plop into the water as voles slink from the bank into the fresh flowing water of the Midway, which merges with the Thames at the Hoo peninsula then flows down to the estuary and then out to sea. Margarite stands close by my side, she shivers and pulls the collar up of her jacket. Under a moon-dappled by clouds an ill wind brings with it a chill sending ripples across the water, in the distance, the river meanders around a large island and away from our anchorage. The crew prepare to lower row boats over the side, we plan to follow a tributary of the Midway until St Mary Hoo island is in view and I hope if all goes well Lady Jane will be waiting in St Mary’s church. My dearest sister does not trust the pirates stating,
 

“They could not organise a fight in a brothel”

I assured her they can and I have myself observed the carnage. I am impatient to start we have little time to waste if we are to reach the rendezvous with Lady Jane. I am somewhat relieved when Salty approaches signalling that the boats are ready.} Come dear heart, I will go down the ladder first, then you follow and I help you into the boat.

Salty stands to one side of the wooden ladder on deck, Charles swings his leg over the side, placing his foot on the first wooden run of the ladder and quickly descends into the row boat, I prepare to go next, Charles reaches out with both arms placing his hands around my waists and lifts me down into the little boat, at that moment a light ripple across the water and the voices of men can be heard.]

{Takes the oars and starts to row … and not in a straight line. We zig zag across the estuary, keeping a careful lookout. At one point, we stop, and raise our fishing rods, whistling innocently, as though out for a night fish. Do people even fish at night?

I shake my head with a smile. If I were a lookout, I’d immediately notice us and raise the alarm, but that lot in the naval base seem way more gullible. Or their telescopes dinnae work in the dark. I’m not sure if that’s worrying or reassuring … wait, I’m a pirate. Reassuring.} Row, men, row fast and straight!

{Stepping from the boat a little dishevelled lace cuffs which normally are firm and stiff hang limply to my fingertips.  No wonder after a precarious journey with madmen with “fishing rods” commanding the ores, hogs blood I despair!}

Jane! My dearest friend. {I take both Janes hands in mine, relieved no harm has befallen her.} Dear heart, am I to presume all the appropriate arrangement are in place! {Lady Jane nods placing her finger to her lips we proceed in silence following Jane who lifts her lantern bidding us all to follow her.}

 

 

 

[Charles drops behind to speak to Captain Bart, Jane and I walk together taking the opportunity to speak of the conflict, and the situation is far graver than I imagined. Members of the Commons and Lords gathered in the King’s Oxford Parliament, the King having a loyal following in the county regions. The king has expressed his kind regard for John Braganza allegiance and Jane has expressed to Charles his gratitude to the King of Portugal for his generous investment. Without the alliance our mission any plans will never be implemented, or worse still should the gold fall into the Roundheads hands. On reaching St Mary’s church our number almost fills the small nave; small groups are shown into the vestry to be attired in clothes more suitable for both the journey and so the pirates are less inconspicuous.] Captain I pray your men are equipped to handle any situation!

{This is ridiculous. Yet another costume. Yet another set of clothes that make me itch and squirm. Why do people wear these things? Oh … they’re talking to me … and apparently expecting a reply. I knew I should have been paying attention. Where is Billy to keep me focused when I need him. Actually, that is a good question. Where the hell is Billy?} Equipped? Yes, yes, we’re equipped. {I tug on the jacket to prove my point.} I will personally drive the second wagon, and we have enough muskets hidden to ensure our safety. Normally I’d act as lookout, but I appear to have mislaid my best wagon driver. Has anyone seen Billy? {The shrugs are not exactly reassuring, especially as Murat is refusing to meet my eye.} My men will follow my orders. You need not have any concerns. We are all eager for this mission to succeed. {And not at all eager to get caught.}

{I carry two muskets over to one of the waggons, concealing them under waxed sailcloth. Then I turn to talk to the men.}
Friends! This will prove to be a difficult task, our journey long and dangerous. The waggons are loaded with a cargo of candles and wine our mission is to deliver the much-needed supplies to Oxford, the gold will be pack in the wine barrels, which are empty and filled with straw, naturally there will be wine and rum bottles layered above the gold. {Looks are exchanged between Charles and I am not convinced the pirates are the best choice to escort a shipment of gold} The rum as payment should the mission be successful.

{Margarite smiles with a somewhat worried reflection hidden deep behind her dark eyes. I stand, already disguised as a delivery driver the apparel slightly itchy and not a lace cuff in sight, “Slap me aren’t I the master of disguise!”

I begin to address the group gathered around my waggon, who will make or break this mission.} Ladies, and Gentlemen! {I cough somewhat at the latter} “Time is of the essence if King Charles is to raise the royal standard at Derry Mount near Nottingham, this will be a signal for his supporters to rally to his side. The King already has the support of 2,000 cavalries and a small number of Yorkshire infantry-men, using the archaic system of a Commission of Array, however, this depends on the money to pay them, I pray his supporters can start to build a larger army around the standard. Without the contribution from Portugal which it is more imperative that the delivery reaches Oxford our failure will jeopardise the throne of England. “ {I direct my attention towards the good captain!}

“Now Captain Bart if you will be so kind we have a long drive ahead, after you dear chap!”

 

{I pray the mission will be as successful as the as the others, one never knows what dangers lay ahead and God forbid have broken through our spy network. James Maxwell, my stepfather, a loyal confidant of the King and his father Henry. With the succession of Charles 1 to the throne, he assumed the office of Black Rod and since the dissolution of parliament has acted as private financier smuggling funds for the Royalists. This enabled me to work closely with merchants, in fact on one occasion, with the aid of a laundress, we arranged the smuggling of no less than 1,705 lbs of gold at once. The sum came from Royalist merchant Sir Paul Pindar, located in London, and was delivered into Oxford, concealed inside barrels of soap. And now with trepidation, I commend the safety of the waggons to the captain and his men. I give up a prayer for my dear Charles who drives the most important waggon, we have concealed the gold in the wooden barrels, without the knowledge of the ship’s company, Charles commands control of the gold. And for good measure furniture is stacked and roped on top of the barrels adding to the deception as we journey to Oxford.}
